Staff Software Engineer, Tech Foundations

Airbnb is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Tech Foundations Observability team. The role involves building and scaling the observability platform handling metrics, logs, and traces for both human and AI consumers. Responsibilities include leading technical direction, designing distributed systems, mentoring engineers, and contributing to open-source projects. The team focuses on cost control, query performance, and reliability.

9+ years of industry experience with large-scale distributed systems. Deep expertise in at least one telemetry domain (metrics, logs, or tracing). Strong coding skills in Go or Java/Kotlin. Experience with cloud-native infrastructure: Kubernetes, AWS, service mesh (Istio, Envoy). Clear communication and ability to lead technical direction. Nice-to-have includes contributions to open-source telemetry projects, time series storage, anomaly detection, and AI agent APIs.
