Staff+ Software Engineer, VectorDB

Anthropic is seeking a Staff+ Software Engineer to join the Databases organization and work on the vector search infrastructure powering Claude. Responsibilities include owning the vector database layer (index structures, storage, query execution), production readiness, scaling throughput, hybrid retrieval, evaluation methodology, and technical leadership. The role requires hands-on coding and architectural decisions.

Direct experience building a production vector database or ANN search system. Deep knowledge of ANN index structures, vector quantization, filtered search. Strong systems programming in Rust, C++, or Go. Experience with large-scale distributed storage/serving systems. Track record of delivering ambiguous technical projects. Strong communication. Interest in AI safety. Preferred: object-storage-backed databases, full-text search, embedding models, GPU accelerators, prior tech lead experience.
