Software Engineer, API Safety

OpenAI's API Safety team seeks a product-minded software engineer to design and build dashboards and APIs for safety controls, develop scalable systems for frontier model deployment, and partner with Safety Research and Integrity to mitigate emerging risks. The role involves owning projects from design to launch, ensuring availability and latency of safeguards across high-volume API traffic.

7+ years of backend/infrastructure/product engineering experience. Strong software engineering fundamentals, proficiency in Python, Go, Rust, or TypeScript. Experience building production backend services, distributed systems, and reasoning about concurrency, latency, observability. Product judgment and developer empathy. Clear communication. Experience with observability, abuse prevention, trust and safety, etc. is a plus.
