Senior Server Engineer, Data Products

Strava seeks a Senior Data Engineer for the Data Products team, which is central to Strava's AI strategy. The role involves building and operating pipelines and access layers that transform raw data, algorithms, and models into production-ready data products used across the app. The engineer will collaborate with ML engineers, data scientists, and product teams to ensure reliability, freshness, and clear contracts, and contribute to self-serve tools for other teams. The work includes developing and maintaining pipelines, APIs, and platform tooling for derived data products like embeddings, ranking artifacts, and enriched activity streams, and owning end-to-end delivery from design to monitoring.

Candidates must have experience building and operating complex, data-intensive backend systems in production at scale, with a track record of breaking large technical problems into well-scoped work. Required experience includes building access layers, platform tooling, or internal developer products for large-scale data or ML systems, with strong contract design and self-serve patterns. Must have experience with production data pipelines and batch/stream workflows using Spark, Kafka, Flink, Iceberg, Snowflake, or similar. Proficiency in backend development on cloud environments (AWS preferred) using Python, Scala, Go, or equivalent, and understanding of distributed systems and containerized infrastructure (Kubernetes, Docker) is needed. The role requires comfort with technical ownership, design trade-offs, collaboration, and mentoring. Eagerness to engage with ML concepts like embeddings, classification, model evaluation, and GenAI is a plus, along with strong communication skills.
