About the role
OpenAI is seeking a Performance Engineer to optimize infrastructure and application-level performance across products like ChatGPT and the API. The role involves root-cause analysis, profiling, instrumentation, and architecture-level improvements across the stack, collaborating with cross-functional teams to push latency, throughput, and cost-efficiency.
Requirements
7+ years in software engineering with performance/reliability in high-scale distributed systems. Proficiency with performance profiling tools and tracing systems. Experience optimizing across layers (database, networking, storage, runtime, GPU). Strong understanding of OS internals, scheduling, memory management, IO patterns. Experience with observability, benchmarking, performance infrastructure. Ability to navigate ambiguity and align stakeholders.
