Toast is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to set technical direction for Developer Experience, owning local dev environments, build tooling, shared libraries, and the developer portal. The role involves designing self-service golden paths, collaborating with product to measure friction, and shaping an AI-native developer experience. This is a remote/hybrid role in the US.
Requirements
8+ years of software engineering experience; deep expertise in Kotlin, Java, Go, or TypeScript; strong experience with build systems (Gradle, Maven, npm); track record of leading technical initiatives; experience designing developer-facing products (CLIs, SDKs, testing frameworks); hands-on with AI-assisted tools; strong communication skills. Nice-to-haves include Backstage, LLM-powered tools, containerized environments, developer productivity metrics.
