Software Engineer, Backend/Applied ML (Safety & Integrity)

We're looking for a talented Software Engineer to join Safety Engineering at Character.AI. You will design, develop, and scale backend systems and apply machine learning to tackle integrity and safety challenges. You will provide technical leadership, drive innovation, and contribute to the platform's trustworthiness. This is a high-impact role involving backend system architecture, ML model development, cross-functional collaboration, and mentorship.

8+ years of software engineering experience with backend focus. Bachelor's/Master's/PhD in CS or related. Proven track record in large-scale distributed systems. Expertise in Python, Go, Java, or C++. Hands-on ML experience for integrity/safety challenges. Strong problem-solving and communication skills. Ability to work in fast-paced environment.
