Backend Software Engineer, Weather & Aviation

Spire's Weather & Aviation business delivers global weather forecasts, flight tracking, and aviation data to customers. We are seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to help production systems scale, harden, and stay reliable. You will own critical services end to end, contribute to architecture, and raise the engineering bar. Responsibilities include building AWS-based backend services, designing authentication/authorization with OIDC and OAuth 2.0, developing REST APIs and streaming endpoints, improving observability, sharing production operations, applying secure engineering practices, taking technical lead on projects, mentoring engineers, and collaborating with product owners and data scientists.

6+ years backend development experience with production systems. Track record of improving uptime and handling growth. Strong AWS experience (ECS/EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, VPC) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CDK, CloudFormation). Strong knowledge of OIDC and OAuth 2.0, identity providers, JWT handling. Experience with REST APIs and streaming/real-time endpoints. Experience with NIST or ISO/IEC 27001. Proficiency in Python, Go, Java, or TypeScript/Node.js. Excellent documentation and communication skills. Nice to have: Pangeo ecosystem, weather/aviation domain, GRIB2, NetCDF, METAR/TAF, ADS-B, FAA.
